The Gaia Collection is a stunning series of lighting spheres that breathe new life into a timeless Mid-century Murano technique known as Mezza Filigrana. This versatile collection offers endless creative potential, enabling customers to curate unique groupings or clusters, whether blending different patterns or repeating a single design element.

This ancient technique, nearly lost to history, has been revived with meticulous craftsmanship and custom hardware. I’ve developed 9 distinct patterns using Murano filigrana in Lattimo white, Black, Amber, and Red hues.

The generous glass sphere, with a diameter of 35 cm (14 inches), features modern hardware that accentuates the intricate pattern through a transparent design. It is ideal for creating a stunning cluster over a dining table, illuminating a kitchen island, or even adding a dramatic touch to a staircase.

This particular piece showcases a captivating sequence of five amber filigree canes, alternated with two deep red filigree canes. Inspired by the iconic asymmetric patterns of Dino Martens, the colors evoke the distinctive Tessuto combinations of Carlo Scarpa. These red and amber filigree canes possess an extraordinary beauty. While traditional filigrana canes are often created with a clear sommerso casing over a strong color like black or white, this colored version have a deep red and rich amber casing surrounding lattimo white, all encased in clear glass. The result is a highly intricate, Murrina-like design.

For this masterpiece, I collaborated with the Murano maestro to execute two complete ritorto twists (known as menà in the local dialect) on a mosaic of over 70 alternating canes, creating a flawless crisscrossed pattern.

The Gaia pattern is meticulously crafted by rolling glass over a parallel mosaic of Murano smalto filigree. Before blowing, the glass undergoes two rotations, transforming the straight canes into elegant spirals. The tips are then delicately cut with scissors, revealing the signature see-through reticello effect. This finish is recognized as mezza filigrana, where filigrana refers to the reticello, with the “grano” bubble nestled inside the web.

The modern twist on this classic design is the custom hardware. Constructed from solid brass, it houses an Italian-manufactured LED module mounted on the inner surface of the fixture. This energy-efficient module offers a brilliant 1000 lumens of light output, is dimmable, and features a CRI of 90+, ensuring exceptional color rendering. The absence of a central socket and bulb allows the beautiful filigree pattern to be fully appreciated. The silk wire and UL-CE SELV driver integrate seamlessly into the brass canopy, completing the design.
